Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing all of the pieces for the lab in full bloom and I have to say I am pretty blown away at the level of choreographic wonder and the technical proficiency of the dancers. They each used this idea of water in unique ways and by the end of the afternoon I could really feel the rivers, the mist and the movement of water. It was refreshing! We still have a few surprises to work through and Diane Gaby’s lighting designs are, as usual, very lovely and really brings out the choreographic intents.

Diane Gaby is one of FWDC’s Parkview Healing Arts Program artists is the Assistant Director for the Jesters of University of St. Francis. She has offered technical assistance to FWDC for the past eight years and recognized as Master Technician (1998, 99) by the Fort Wayne Civic Theater.

“As a visual artist, I’ve spent years working to capture light…as a lighting designer, I get to control it and that is infinitely interesting to me. My process begins with determining a Director’s vision for a performance as-a-whole, then I look at rehearsal video for blocking and review any notes from choreographers about costuming/effects and consider the venue in winch it will take place. With all this in mind, I view the rehearsals again allowing myself to get caught-up in the expressiveness of the dance, feel the timing and envision colors and intensities of illumination that will best enhance the mood and movement of each piece then devise how I can make that happen in the particular space using the instruments available. It is a process that is both organic and technical…I love that.”

The audience will have the opportunity to share in writings their responses to each piece and at the end a brief interaction where they can ask the choreographers questions about their pieces. I have a special place in my heart for these labs, as they afford local artists the opportunities to work together and present their work. We hope you’ll be able to come see Bodies of Water this weekend.
