Winter Workshop #1: Taiko

About this workshop: Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming. Led by John Yost, this class will touch on the technique behind this ancient tradition. Students will learn rhythms using choreographed arm movements. No experience required for this beginning level class for teens and adults. Drums will be provided.

About the instructor: John Yost is a master facilitator, rhythmist, and educator. He has performed, recorded, and presented internationally. John is a Certified Drum Circle Facilitator by both Village Music Circles and the Drum Circle Facilitator’s Guild. In 2020, John became a global trainer for Village Music Circle. He has studied drumming in Africa, Japan, and in the USA. John graduated with a degree in Percussion from Northeastern University in Illinois (1992) and obtained certification from Northwestern University in Leadership (2013). John has led interactive music making activities and drum circles for conferences, corporations, schools, community groups, and major events worldwide. Notable festivals include: Lollapalooza, Hangout Fest, and Festival of Nations. He is a leader and performer in both Sound Magic and Kaiju Daiko and has consulted as an entertainment coordinator on world class events. John teaches ongoing West African drum classes, Japanese Taiko classes, and facilitates a free, monthly community drum circle. He is also the author of a best-selling instructional video series entitled, John Yost Teaches, and serves as the Co-Chair of the Interactive Drumming Committee for the Percussive Arts Society where he is a Remo endorsed facilitator. John is also a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional by the National Recreation and Parks Association.
