WHATZUP – DANCERS GO INTO LAB TO CREATE CHOREOGRAPHY
What do you imagine when you hear the word “lab”? Do you think of a scientist wearing goggles and conducting experiments? Or do you think of a Labrador retriever playing fetch in a field?
At Fort Wayne Dance Collective, the word is associated with choreographers and dancers in the studio.
For more than 35 years, FWDC have annually hosted their Choreographer’s Lab. This is a “workshop-style intensive that gives professional, creative, and technical support to local choreographers.”
Receiving this type of support is a unique opportunity, especially in the Midwest, where choreographic resources can be hard to come by for new or independent choreographers.

Three Rivers Music Theatre and Fort Wayne Dance Collective invite you to “join the Jellicles” as they collaborate to bring the iconic musical Cats to the stage.
Based on a collection of poems written by T.S. Eliot in 1939, this show tells the story of the Jellicle Cats.
“The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year — the night of the Jellicle Ball,” a description reads on the Dance Collective’s website. “One by one, they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.”

This year, Japanese culture, folk dance, and stories will be brought center stage.
Also keeping with tradition, FWDC will welcome guest artists to perform alongside their professional company, students, and Fort Wayne community members. Dancers from the Japanese Folk Dance Institute of New York will come all the way from the big city to make their Fort Wayne debut in this show, which runs Oct. 20-22 at PPG ArtsLab.

THE JOURNAL GAZETTE – FORT WAYNE DANCE COLLECTIVE PROGRAM EMBRACES DIVERSE ABILITIES
It’s sometimes difficult for Ayla and Seth Bennett to put words to their emotions.
“They sometimes don’t have the words to express how they’re feeling,” says Elisa Bennett, Ayla and Seth’s mom. “They have a harder time expressing emotions than they do (facts and) science.”
One effective method the Bennetts have found to help Ayla and Seth – both of whom are on the autism spectrum – express themselves is through dance.
Both take classes at Fort Wayne Dance Collective…

“It was a pivot point for me,” Ballard says of the performance.
