Fort Wayne Dance Collective has a long and strong history of hosting guest artists. During the early 80’s, we regularly hosted a summer intensive workshop with artists from the east and west coasts. It wasn’t until 1989, 10 years into our history, that we brought a dance “company.” Someone in our group had seen The Dance Brigade from Oakland, CA at the Michigan Women’s Festival and suggested that we present them to Fort Wayne.
In retrospect, their artist fee was ridiculously low so we had little risk of losing money on such a venture. The Dance Brigade, an all women troupe with Krissy Keefer as the artistic driving force, presented works on the political spectrum including women’s issues of the time. Interestingly enough, they also had a piece about immigration! We probably filled half the house at the Arts United Center, but it was enough to light the fire to continue this venture the next year when we started receiving funds from Lincoln Financial Foundation. We brought the powerful company of the Urban Bush Women in 1990 to a sold out house. We continue this honored tradition this spring with the presentation of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company on March 21, 2015 at 8 p.m. at the Arts United Center.
