Last weekend I was in New York City, visiting family and catching up on some of the current Broadway shows. I had the chance to see the newly painted ice cream trucks squeaking around the corner and the fresh tulips lining Park Avenue.
Spring is here!
I also got the chance to ride the Subway. A year ago today I would be riding the Subway home after a long day at work. If I were lucky enough to get a seat in the packed train car, I would try to take a little nap. Sometimes as I was dozing off I would be interrupted by the startling shout of a young kid screaming, “What time is it? SHOWTIME!” I would wake up and see the crowded train full of eye rolls and sighs. Commuters would move out of the way to make room for the newest group of street dancers who were about to take over with a breakdance show. Most of the time the riding regulars were annoyed to say the least when the loud music and show would start. Tourists would pull out their phones in amazement. But by the time the B-boys and B-girls had completed their show, the entire train car would be alive with smiles and loud applause. How can you not love street breakdancing? It is fascinating and superhuman.
Breakdancing may have originated on the streets of New York – but it has become a worldwide phenomenon and dancers are doing it all around the world. Each break dancer incorporates his or her own style, individual tricks and personality in their performance. Breakdancing is experimenting with one’s own body – seeing how to make the impossible possible.
This summer Fort Wayne native Richy Mon will be teaching Breaking at the Fort Wayne Dance Collective on Wednesdays from 3-4pm. Richy is FWDC’s newest teacher, a B-Boy star (codeword for a boy who breaks), not to mention a state champion pole vaulter! We are excited to have Richy add flavor and diversity to our curriculum.
We promise to bring you a fun and sweaty dance adventure this summer complete with the classes you have come to love and some new ones too! Please check out our summer schedule and give us a call or stop by if you need some advice on how to maximize your fun this summer!
